MADRIGAL, a Concordia 41 yawl, has been donated to the Island Institute for sale through its boat gift program. The proceeds of the sale will provide long-term benefits to the Institute's programs.

The donor is MADRIGAL's longtime owner, Robert P. Bass, Jr., a New Hampshire attorney who served for many years on the Island Institute's board of trustees.

"I'm delighted that the proceeds of the sale of MADRIGAL will support the continuing good work" of the Institute and its staff, Bass said. "But I am sad indeed that this gift will end my adventuring on MADRIGAL among the storied isles of Maine and beyond. Alas, the lure and beauty of those isles seem for me to have given way to the dull dictates of discretion."

"Those of us at the Institute who have been fortunate enough to enjoy time aboard MADRIGAL with Rob and his family are keenly aware of the profound emotional significance of this gift," said Institute Vice President Peter Ralston. "We are humbled and grateful for the spirit in which she has been given."

Built in Germany in 1964 for the Concordia Co. of South Dartmouth, Massachusetts, MADRIGAL is mahogany planked over oak frames with bronze screw fastenings. Her care and maintenance have been impeccable, noted surveyor Clement C. Woodhull after his inspection in December. "She is a purist's yacht in the style in which she was designed and built."

The Island Institute will be offering MADRIGAL for sale. For information, visit the I.I. website www.islandinstitute.org or contact Patricia Shannon at (207) 594-9209.
